Mobility Services Lab (MSL)

Initial Situation

Demand for mobility is shifting. Less people see cars as a status symbol and instead focus on the mobility service. This shift from goods-dominant businesses to services-dominant business is a major challenge for the established automotive industry. At the same time, urbanization intensifies. 50 years ago, only about 30% of the total world population lived in cities. Today, this figure has increased to about 50% and it is estimated to rise to 65% in 2040. This trend demands for new, sustainable forms of mobility services, such as intermodal travelling. Therefore, it gets more and more important to provide holistic mobility solutions, adapted to the multifaceted needs of different users.

IT plays a major role in facing these challenges. In addition to the mobility services which are mostly used on mobile devices, underlying processes need to ensure that the right information reaches the right user at the right time.

Project Aim

The Mobility Services Lab (formerly Automotive Services Lab) aims at creating innovative IT-based solutions for sustainable mobility in the 21st century. Mobility services as well as the underlying platforms are developed by bringing together partners from industry and university.

Realization

We focus on the technical and economic aspects related to the development and implementation of IT-based solutions for mobility. On the one hand, solutions for the technical aspects will be developed (infrastructure requirements, enabling technologies, design and prototyping, user interface). On the other hand, the economic aspects are considered (modularization of services, value creation and business models). Our expertise covers topics from platform design to service development to systematic implementation of innovations as well as design of business models for mobility services. Different work modes enable close cooperation between researchers, students and industry partners.

Work Packages:

The MSL engages in the following areas:

  • Practical courses for students in cooperation with industry partners (Practical Course Mobility Services)
  • Engagement in research projects together with industry partners (e.g. visio.M, ExCELL)
  • Supervision of theses
  • Support of student projects (e.g. ParkMünchen, TUMitfahrer, Glasschair, now munevo

Value

The MSL offers customized, individualized and innovative solutions for the challenges related to IT-based solutions for mobility. Our young and dynamic team is characterized by the systematic development of promising solutions, relevant experience in prototyping services, and by its independence. It gives students the ability to apply their knowledge and skills in real projects and get valuable feedback from industry partners. The additional value the MSL provides for students has been acknowledged by the TUM-Lehrfonds in 2014.
