- DFG Synergia Project Officially Launched: The DFG Synergia project Synergia: Multisensory Integration in High-Intensity Environments – Bridging AI Analysis and Human Perception is now officially online. I serve as Scientific Coordinator of the joint project between TU Dresden and the Technical University of Munich.
- CAMP Sonification Team: We have established the CAMP Sonification Team at the Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures (TUM), focusing on intelligent auditory interaction, multisensory human–AI systems, and next-generation computer-assisted medicine.
- MICCAI 2026 Paper Accepted: Our paper Physics-Based iOCT Sonification for Real-Time Interaction Awareness in Subretinal Injection has been accepted to MICCAI 2026. The preprint is available on arXiv.
- Two IEEE Access Papers Published: Two papers from our group have been published in IEEE Access: Physics-Driven Sonification for Multisensory Needle Guidance in Percutaneous Epicardial Access and The Impact of Multisensory Feedback on Supporting Physicians in Robotic Ultrasound Interaction. These works advance auditory and multisensory interaction techniques for image-guided interventions and intelligent surgical assistance.
- Data Sonification Award 2026: Our papers BioSonix: Can Physics-Based Sonification Perceptualize Tissue Deformations From Tool Interactions? (IPMI 2025) and A Framework for Multimodal Medical Image Interaction (IEEE TVCG 2024) received the Data Sonification Award 2026, recognizing their contributions to computational sonification and multisensory interaction for medical applications.

Curriculum Vitae
Sasan Matinfar is an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersection of computer-assisted intervention, multisensory human–AI interaction, medical extended reality, and human perception, with a particular focus on advancing the emerging field of surgical sonification.
He is Research Lead of the CAMP Sonification Team at the Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures, Technical University of Munich, and a Senior Researcher at the Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop, TU Dresden. He also serves as Scientific Coordinator of the joint DFG Synergia Project between TU Dresden and TUM, coordinating interdisciplinary research across engineering, cognitive science, and clinical medicine.
He conceived and developed the From Tissue to Sound research framework, introducing computational methods for transforming multimodal intraoperative data—including medical imaging, vibroacoustic sensing, and interaction data—into perceptually meaningful auditory and multisensory feedback. His research investigates adaptive multisensory interfaces and intelligent surgical assistance systems designed to enhance surgical perception, situational awareness, and clinical decision-making.
Sasan received his Ph.D. in Computer Science summa cum laude from TUM under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nassir Navab. He also holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Computer Science from LMU Munich and studied Musicology at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar and Piano Performance at the Art University of Tehran. This combination of engineering, cognitive science, and musical expertise shapes his interdisciplinary approach to medical sonification and multisensory interaction.
His research has been recognized with multiple international awards, including the Data Sonification Awards in 2025 and 2026, the MICCAI Best Paper Award Finalist distinction in 2023, and the MICCAI Young Scientist Award in 2017. His work has appeared in venues including Medical Image Analysis, IEEE TVCG, Scientific Reports, IEEE Access, MICCAI, and IPMI.
He is the lead inventor on multiple international patent families in intelligent surgical assistance and the founder of SoniXense, a technology initiative translating research in intelligent auditory and multisensory interaction into clinically deployable medical technologies. He also teaches medical sonification and medical XR, supervises student researchers, reviews regularly for MICCAI and IEEE ISMAR, and co-organizes the Medical Augmented Reality Summer School and the IEEE ISMAR MIX Workshop.
