Alex Hocks: Evaluation of preCICE in an Earth System Model Regridding Benchmark
SCCS Colloquium |
In the field of Earth System Modelling, meshes do not align or match usually, necessatating the use of couplers. We evaluate preCICE, a general purpose coupling library, in this field by comparing it to commonly used and specialised couplers of this field. This is done by reproducing the benchmark by Valcke et al.. The process of using preCICE is described and results are evaluated leading to the conclusion that in the current version of preCICE, it yields comparable results. Especially when using the rbf mapping of preCICE significantly lower errors are achievable. However, when integral properties must be preserved, then , with the methods available, the accuracy is reduced proportional to the disparity of the surface area of the different meshes.
