Information Systems Engineering
We study how to engineer information systems that remain sustainable, trustworthy, and scalable as they grow in complexity. This means systems whose energy and carbon footprint remain manageable, whose behavior can be audited and attributed, and whose performance remains predictable at a reasonable cost.
Modern information systems are rarely built from scratch. They integrate legacy platforms, third-party services, in-house components, and increasingly incorporate AI. They are also built continuously and operate across distributed, cloud-native environments. Our research focuses on quality-oriented software engineering, helping software architects make, quantify, and justify decisions throughout the conception, development, refactoring, and operation of information systems.
We combine empirical studies of large-scale cloud-native applications with prototypes and new measurement approaches. Our goal is to turn system behavior into evidence that enables better architectural decisions and, ultimately, better information systems engineering.
The Information Systems Engineering research group was established in August 2026 and is currently building up. We are looking for motivated students for Bachelor's and Master's theses and Guided Research, particularly those interested in Kubernetes, cloud platforms, and microservices.
