Juxtaposing Legal AI Tools and their Practical Use: A Qualitative Study

Recent advances in AI have enabled a bloom in tools available to legal practitioners for automation of day-today legal tasks. While the development of such tools continues to flourish, it is unclear to what degree they are being adopted by legal professionals, and moreover, for which use cases AI-based tools can be used. Working at the intersection of Legal AI tool providers and their users, or appliers, we conduct a semi-structured interview study with 24 providers and appliers, investigating the process of Legal AI tool development and deployment, as well as exploring the main perceived benefits and challenges therein. We find that providers and appliers of Legal AI tools are aligned on the goals of Legal AI, especially in increasing access to legal knowledge and justice as well as improving efficiency, yet there remain gaps in communication that create disparities between what providers offer and what appliers need. These findings highlight points of improvement in the Legal AI tool provider-applier relationship, as well as set the stage for Legal AI research and practice moving forward.
