Project Description

In decentralized cloud-edge environments where multiple providers and users must collaborate seamlessly, digital infrastructure and interoperability are key enablers. The “Federation Architecture for Composed Infrastructure Services” (FACIS) project is designed to address this challenge by advancing federated digital ecosystems that combine robust governance, open standards, and flexible technical building blocks. FACIS is part of the Important Projects of Common European Interest – Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS/8ra) initiative, a major European effort to establish a dependable Multi-Provider Cloud-Edge Continuum across industry and research domains.

The goal of FACIS is to create a foundation for interoperable, scalable, and trustworthy multi-provider infrastructure services that can be composed dynamically across different cloud and edge environments. To achieve this, FACIS develops, amongst other deliverables, a harmonized governance framework for Service Level Agreements (SLAs), machine-readable SLAs that enable automated monitoring and adaptation, and a digital contracting service that enables secure, legally binding digital contracts.

The research group supports the project’s efforts to create an SLA governance framework by developing a taxonomy for cooperative SLAs. The taxonomy was continuously refined and validated, including alignment with legal requirements defined by project partners and, where necessary, practitioner feedback gathered in community workshops. Based on the taxonomy, we are currently creating a machine-readable SLA representation, with particular attention to the potential integration of the digital contracting service to be developed within the FACIS project.
