New Article Accepted for Publication in the Communications of the Association for Information Systems: “Integrating Fog Computing into the Cloud-Edge Continuum: How Organizations Can Create Value by Using Fog-based Information Systems”

Although fog computing is a promising approach to bringing computing resources closer to where data is generated, its adoption in practice remains limited. While prior research has demonstrated the technical potential of fog-based information systems (FBIS), it remains unclear how these capabilities translate into organizational outcomes. As a result, organizations lack guidance on how to leverage FBIS to create business value.
To address this challenge, we combined a review of fog computing research with a qualitative interview study and an analysis of 29 real-world FBIS. Based on these insights, we developed a framework that explains how organizations can transform fog computing capabilities into business value. We identify four value creation mechanisms, with twelve variants, that link technological capabilities to organizational outcomes. This shows how organizations can leverage FBIS to improve their system’s reliability, reduce costs, enhance sustainability, increase operational efficiency, and enable business innovation.
By opening the “black box” of fog computing value creation and bridging previously disconnected streams of technical and application-oriented fog computing research, the study provides both a foundation for future research and practical guidance for organizations evaluating fog computing adoption.
