Conference Visit and Paper Presentation at CAiSE 2026 in Verona


Yanxiu Wuwang and Niclas Kannengießer visited the 38th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE 2026) in Verona, Italy.
Our group contributed to the conference program with the paper “Decentralization Drivers for Purposeful Decentralization of Distributed Ledger Technology Systems” by Yanxiu Wuwang, Niclas Kannengießer, Tobias Dehling, Benjamin Sturm, and Ali Sunyaev.
Distributed ledger technology (DLT) is seen as a key technology to decentralize information systems (IS). However, DLT systems that are perceived to be decentralized often inadvertently centralize, as exemplified by the potential of large mining pools to manipulate consensus in the Bitcoin blockchain. To support purposeful decentralization already at the system design stage, the authors reviewed whitepapers and documentation of 32 layer-1 DLT systems. Based on this analysis, they identified 35 candidate decentralization drivers and distilled them into 18 decentralization drivers grounded in their decentralization concept. The paper further groups the analyzed systems into six DLT system archetypes with similar decentralization characteristics, thereby providing guidance for designing decentralization-oriented distributed ledger technology systems. The paper contributes to the engineering of more purposefully decentralized DLT-based IS by consolidating extant knowledge on IS decentralization in the DLT domain and serving as a foundation for the design of decentralization-oriented DLT systems.
