Prof. Dr. Alexander Fraser

Academic Career and Areas of Research

Alexander Fraser is known for his work in machine learning for machine translation, language modeling, and multilingual natural language processing (NLP). His research focuses on addressing data sparsity and integrating linguistic and world knowledge into NLP systems. He also collaborates with language communities to develop technologies for their languages. His contributions span both theoretical advances and practical applications.

Prof. Fraser received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in 2007. From 2007 to 2013, he was affiliated with the University of Stuttgart. From 2013 to 2024, he was at LMU Munich, where he became Professor of Information and Language Processing in 2017. He was awarded an ERC Starting Grant in 2014, an ERC Proof of Concept Grant in 2022, and an ERC Advanced Grant in 2024. Since 2024, he has held the Chair of Data Analytics & Statistics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He is also a Principal Investigator (PI) at the Munich Center for Machine Learning.
